our projects for 2026

Faced with the worsening crisis in South Kivu in recent months and drastic cuts in funding, RENAF has decided to focus its efforts on the region's most urgent humanitarian needs. In 2026, we will provide an integrated, multi-sector humanitarian response to vulnerable populations, combining education, health, mental health and WASH, in order to improve their access to basic services in a sustainable manner.

Education and psychological support for displaced pupils in Kaniola

Due to massive population displacement, children are extremely vulnerable. In Kaniola, in the province of Walungu,

2,150 children are currently displaced, without access to education and suffering from psychological trauma.

RENAF wishes to rehabilitate the primary schools in Mufumbe and Cisaza in order to provide these children with access to education and psychosocial support. We wish to train all teachers in basic psychosocial support and distribute 2,150 school kits to pupils.

Equipping and strengthening existing health centres

RENAF wishes to strengthen the health centres in Katana, Kalehe/Ihusi, Kadutu and Bagira/Mushekere to make them fully functional and deploy 40 psychosocial support workers there. The aim is to offer comprehensive mental health and psychosocial support services (MHPSS) to 2,000 people.

Prevention of cholera by our psychosocial assistants

To combat the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases in South Kivu, we plan to deploy awareness agents (who receive ongoing training) in targeted areas. We want to raise awareness among communities about the risks of contamination and promote everyday hygiene practices, particularly water treatment. We also aim to distribute WASH kits to local populations.

Rehabilitation of 15 drinking water sources

To tackle the cholera epidemic in the region, RENAF wants to rehabilitate 15 community fountains to give 25,000 people easy access to safe drinking water. This will help improve everyday hygiene practices and reduce the risk of contamination and transmission, thereby strengthening communities' resilience to epidemics.

Construction of a health centre in Cirhagabwa

The hamlet of Cirhagabwa, in the Kabare region (South Kivu), has been severely affected by the humanitarian crisis. RENAF plans to support the creation of a new health centre to enable rural populations, who are currently very far from health facilities, to access essential care.

This centre will offer integrated medical care including prevention, basic care, maternal and child health, and treatment for physical trauma related to violence and displacement.

It will serve as an essential health relay point in an area marked by crises and local emergencies.
